How to Create Mobile Ads That Convert (Without Harming SEO)

Want to use mobile popups on your website?

Mobile pop-ups can be very effective at generating leads, increasing sales, and driving more app downloads, but you need to get them right. Otherwise, you could end up hurting your site’s search engine ranking.

In this guide, we’ll share how to create high-converting mobile ads without hurting your SEO ranking.

How can mobile pop-ups hurt your SEO?

Mobile popups can hurt your WordPress SEO efforts if they go against Google’s guidelines. Google notes that websites may rank lower in mobile search for using intrusive interstitials or intrusive pop-ups.

If your page has a popup that pops up immediately, Google may penalize that page. This means that your page will not rank as high in Google search results as it would otherwise.

Google doesn’t want your popup to cover all or most of the page before the user can see the content. These are some examples from Google of what they want you to avoid.

So, you might be thinking, why risk creating popups on mobile devices?

The short answer is that it helps you increase conversion rates, which leads to more leads and sales. That’s why many smart business owners and marketers continue to use popups on both mobile and desktop.

The important part is that you need to create your mobile popups in the right way so that it doesn’t affect your SEO ranking.

How to create mobile-friendly popups that won’t hurt your SEO ranking

There are several ways to create mobile popups that won’t hurt your SEO ranking. You can.

  • Create a full screen popup that only appears after a delay.
  • Create a poster or slide that covers only a small part of the screen.
  • For legal notices, use only direct full-screen pop-ups. Examples of these include cookie permissions and age verification pop-ups. They are not penalized by Google.

In our example, we’ll discuss how to create a full-screen popup that will only appear after the user has been on your site for a certain amount of time. However, we’ll also share best practices and tactics you can use to add smart display rules for further optimization.

Only creating a mobile window with OptinMonster

OptinMonster is the easiest way to create a mobile-only popup. It is the most popular lead generation tool on the market and has a powerful WordPress popup generator.

First, you need to visit the OptinMonster website and sign up for an account. Simply click the Get OptinMonster Now button to continue.

While all of their templates are mobile responsive, you need a Pro account to unlock mobile-specific display targeting rules.

After signing up, you need to install and activate the OptinMonster plugin on your WordPress site. For more details, see our step-by-step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Once installed, you should see the welcome screen and the installation wizard. Go ahead and click the “Connect Your Existing Account” button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Connect your existing account

Next, a new window will now open asking you to connect your WordPress site to OptinMonster.

You can click the “Connect to WordPress” button to continue.

Connect OptinMonster to WordPress

Once your OptinMonster account is activated, you’re ready to create a mobile popup.

You can go to: OptinMonster » Campaigns in your WordPress admin and click the Create Your First Campaign button.

Create your first campaign

You’ll be taken to the OptinMonster campaign builder, where you can select a campaign type and template.

Just leave the campaign type as “Popup”.

Select a campaign type

Next, OptinMonster will show you many templates for your pop-up campaign.

First, click the Device/Mobile tab and select the Mobile Specific (Optimized) device filter. From here you can choose any template for your campaign.

Filter mobile responsive templates

A window will open when selecting a template.

Simply enter your campaign name and click the “Start Building” button.

Click start building

The template will automatically load the optin view of the popup in the OptinMonster builder. Customizing content or adding new elements is easy with a drag-and-drop interface.

You can drag any block from the menu on your left and drop it onto the template. For example, you can add an image, a button, a countdown timer, and more.

Customize your mobile popup

In addition, the plugin allows you to customize the existing elements on the template.

For example, to change the default text, you just need to click on it and type the text you want to use.

Customize existing items further

You also need to edit the Success view. This will be what users will see after entering their email addresses.

To edit your success view, simply click the Success tab at the bottom of the screen.

Edit the success view

When you’re happy with both the optin and the success view, don’t forget to click the Save button at the top of the screen.

Setting your mobile popup display rules

Now it’s time to define the display rules for your popup window. First, you need to click the Display Rules tab at the top of your screen.

The default rule is to show your popup after users have been on your site for 5 seconds. If you want, you can increase this period.

Set display rules

You can also add other mobile safe targeting rules to unlock further optimizations, such as:

  • Exit Intent for Mobile – this will only show the popup if the user clicks the back button or is about to close the tab.
  • Inactivity sensor – this will only show a popup after the user has been inactive on the site for a certain number of seconds.
  • Scroll Trigger Popups – this will show the popup only after the user scrolls a certain percentage of the page.
  • Button Click by MonsterLinks – this will only show the popup if the user clicks a specific button.

Your flyer uses a mobile-optimized template. This means it will automatically display only on mobile devices.

Next, you can select the pages on which the popup will appear.

By default, the rule will be set to “current URL path is any page”. This means your popup will appear on all posts and pages on your site.

Select pages to display your campaign

You can then click the Next Step button.

OptinMonster will then allow you to add an animation and sound effect when your mobile window appears.

Choose a sound effect and effects for the campaign

After that, you can click the “Next step” button.

You will now see a summary of your display rules. At this stage you can edit your settings and make changes to your campaign.

Next, you can go to the Integrations tab and add an email marketing service like Constant Contact. OptinMonster integrates with most major platforms, so you just have to choose the one you use.

If you haven’t, WPBeginner readers can get 20% off their first 3 months with Constant Contact.

Just click the + Add New Integration button from the panel on your left and select your email marketing tool.

Integrate with an email marketing service

Next, you can go to the “Published” tab at the top.

After that, make sure the “Publish Status” is changed from “Draft” to “Publish”.

Publish your mobile campaign

Don’t forget to click the Save button at the top of the screen and close the campaign builder.

Put your OptinMonster campaign live on your website

Your OptinMonster campaign will not automatically display on your WordPress site. Instead, you should log into your WordPress admin and go OptinMonster » Campaigns.

You should now see your new mobile popup campaign listed here. Then click the Change Status link under your campaign name and select the Publish option in the Status column.

Change the status to published

Now, your campaign will be displayed on your WordPress site. Go ahead and view it by accessing your website on a mobile device.

Just wait the length of time specified in the display rules and your popup should appear. Here is our popup on our demo site.

Other types of mobile ads that won’t hurt your mobile SEO ranking

In addition to time-delayed and user interaction pop-ups in OptinMonster, you can create a floating bar, slide-in or inline option. Google won’t see them as intrusive, so you don’t have to worry about your SEO taking a hit.

  • A floating bar can appear at the top or bottom of the user’s screen without covering the content.
  • A pop-up window can slide from the bottom or side of a website, usually after a time delay.
  • An embedded optin can fit right into the content, split across a page or post.

Simply select one of these types when you start building your campaign. You will then see the templates you can use.
